Ibadan strange fish is octopus – Police
Mrs. Ramota Salawu, the fish seller (The octopus)
The Oyo State police command, Wednesday, paraded the strange fish that almost caused stampede in Ibadan, Wednesday.
While dismissing some reports that claimed the strange looking creature was a mermaid, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Indabawa, said it was actually an octopus.
He further stated that the creature was strange to residents of Ibadan because they were not living in the riverine area.
The CP said: “I think it was an octopus and not a mermaid as claimed by some reports” and urged the people to remain calm as the story around the discovery of a mermaid was not true.
The fish vendor, Mrs. Ramota Salawu, who first saw the octopus lamented her ordeal with some miscreants who insisted that she must produce the ‘mermaid’ she was hiding in her house.
According to her, the mob destroyed her property including her business. She denied seeing any mermaid as claimed by the surging crowd.
She said: “They beat my children and destroyed my property. I showed this creature to them that I never saw any mermaid.
“Even Osun river goddess adherents came saying they had to perform some rituals but I told them I was not an Osun worshiper and that I don’t know anything about mermaids. Later, the police had to rescue me from them.”
Also, the Permanent Secretary, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Bunmi Babalola said as far as he was concerned, the creature was an octopus.
**If you ask me that creature looks more like a squid

Dubai Residents Lose Weight for Gold
In response to rising levels of obesity, UAE residents can now enter "Your Weight in Gold," a contest which pays contestants to sweat it out. For every kilogram, or 2.2 pounds dropped, contestants take home one gram of gold. At current prices, that's about $45, certainly enough to cover the monthly gym membership. The top three biggest losers will receive a share of nearly $28,000 in gold coins.
The contest kicks off on Friday and contestants must show up to weigh-in on public scales after the nightly Iftar meal.
Thanks to partnerships with the Dubai Gold and Jewelry Group and the Dubai Multi Commodities Center, the city says there's no cap on the gold payouts.
"It depends how much the people are expecting to lose. We have not set a limit," Hussain Lootah, Dubai's director general told The National.
The wealthy gulf nation faces one of the highest obesity rates in the world, thanks in part to the growing popularity of fast-food chains. The World Health Organization estimated 50 percent of adults are obese in the UAE and expects the rate of diabetes to rise to 19.3 percent by 2030.
"When people come here they become obese," Dr. Fuad Ahmed, an obesity surgery consultant, told The National. "The curse of this civilization is that we have stopped using our bodies and we eat too much."
The winners will be announced at the final weigh-in Aug. 16.

Expressions on Cards is a unique, special add-on created by FirstBank Ltd for customers who already use or require its Naira MasterCard. The expression on cards feature was introduced by First Bank of Nigeria Ltd. to give customers the freedom not only to design their Debit Card but to take moments they cherish everywhere they take their wallets to.
Kicking-off with a Campus Storm that started at the University of Lagos, the Head, Marketing and Corporate Communications stated that FirstBank gives its customers the freedom to express themselves by customizing their Naira MasterCard with pictures of themselves, loved ones or moments worth remembering on their cards while enjoying the benefits associated with the MasterCard. The bank would be moving around the country to other tertiary institutions in Nigeria to introduce the card.
She stated that the students in the tertiary institutions were targeted because they usually performed transactions that needed much use of the Naira MasterCard such as paying for certain books and courses like CFA.
The Head, E-Business Group, First Bank, Mr. Chuma Ezirim, stated that the expression on cards was a way to give back to their esteemed customers of the bank in such a way that they feel free to determine what the final outlook of the card will be. He said the bank was in the duty of seeking creative ways to delight its customers.
In his words,
“The benefits of using the card are numerous. You can put the image of a loved one and whenever you look you feel that loved. The card being a Naira MasterCard can be used in Nigeria and in over 210 countries in the world and over 1.9 million ATM machines globally. The card is also secure because it is on the chip-and-pin technology which is the global standard.
He explained that the process for requesting for the product/designing the card was easy. Customers who are interested in getting the expression cards can begin to customize their cards online by visiting the bank’s website expressions.firstbanknigeria.com On this portal, the customer is at liberty to select a picture (from an existing bank-managed gallery or from a personal collection), which would serve as the artwork on the front of his/her card. The card design would be authenticated or approved when the customer visits the nearest branch to pick up his/her card. Cards conforming the terms of the service will be processed and delivered after the customer has affirmed the card request.
Being a globally relevant card, from a reputable and well-respect institution such as First Bank Ltd, youths all over the country finally have the freedom to design a card as unique as they are.
